Bed Bugs

Bed Bug

“Don’t let the bed bugs bite…” Unfortunately this sentiment is once again true in the United States. Due to the increase in international travel, immigration, change in pesticides and the bugs’ resistance to many insecticides, the problem which was once eliminated in the United States is back. Bed Bug infestations are not dependant on cleanliness or socioeconomic boundaries either. The cleanest, most luxurious hotel or house could play host to Bed Bugs.

One of the reasons for the resurgence is the “hitch hiking” nature of the bugs. They can be brought into homes through our luggage, clothes, and even furniture. Just because you may not see Bed Bugs, does not mean that you do not have an infestation as they are difficult to detect. Some common signs to look for are bites, small blood spots on sheets and mattresses, and black fecal droppings.

The American Academy of Dermatology has released a new video titled “How to Check for Bedbugs” video that is part of the Dermatology A to Z: Video Series. The new video provides tips on what to look for. The AAD offers relatable videos that demonstrate tips people can use to properly care for their skin, hair and nails.

Prevention Tips

  • Inspect the hotel room and mattress before unpacking luggage.
  • Store your luggage in the bathtub or bathroom. Do not store luggage and clothes in the hotel dresser, luggage racks, beds or upholstered furniture.
  • Inspect your luggage and clothes before bringing them into your home.
  • Inspect furniture before bringing it into your home.

Palmetto Exterminators’ Treatment Method

If you think you have Bed Bugs, call a professional pest management company immediately. Bed Bugs cannot be treated properly by the homeowner. The treatment is a process that requires the cooperation of the customer with the professional technician. Pesticides alone should not be used to control Bed Bugs. The most effective program for eliminating Bed Bugs is one that uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM). IPM is the use of all possible methods in a logical combination that minimizes the risk of pesticide exposure, safeguards the environment and maximizes effectiveness.
